Revenue for the three months ended March 31, 2012 was $1.5 million, compared to $1.7 million in the first quarter of 2011, and the operating loss for the quarter was $5.5 million, compared to $6.5 million for the comparable period last year. Net loss per share, which includes non-operational items such as adjustments to the fair value of certain warrants, was $0.08 and $0.09 for the three months ended March 31, 2012 and 2011, respectively.

Key Financial Results for First Quarter 2012

Revenues

For the first quarter 2012, revenue from research and development ("R&D") grants and contracts was $1.5 million, compared to $1.7 million for the first quarter 2011. The decrease of $231,000 is primarily due to the net impact of: a $191,000 decrease in revenue from our federal grants and contracts supporting the development of our ST-246® program; a $480,000 revenue decrease related to the conclusion in late 2011 of two federal grants supporting development of a broad-spectrum antiviral; and a $440,000 revenue increase generated by grants for research relating to antivirals against dengue fever and Lassa fever.

Research and Development

Research and development ("R&D") expenses were $4.5 million for the three months ended March 31, 2012, an increase of $900,000 from the $3.6 million incurred for the three months ended March 31, 2011. The increase is mainly due to an increase in expenses for ST-246 development, high-throughput screening, facilities and compensation.

Selling, General and Administrative Expenses

Selling, general and administrative ("SG&A") expenses for the three months ended March 31, 2012 and 2011 were $2.2 million and $4.3 million, respectively, reflecting a decrease of approximately $2.1 million. The decrease is primarily attributable to a decrease of $1.1 million in legal fees and a decrease of $860,000 in stock-based compensation expenses. In 2011, legal expenses were elevated due to trial costs pertaining to the litigation brought by PharmAthene, Inc.

Patent Preparation Expenses

Patent preparation expenses for the quarter were $336,000, compared to $342,000 for the same period last year, mainly due to the Company's continuing efforts to protect our drug candidates in expanded geographic territories.

Financial Condition and Liquidity

Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments on March 31, 2012 were $42.6 million, compared to $49.3 million on December 31, 2011.
