Company ProfileSIGA is founded upon a proprietary method of discovering and developing important drugs. SIGA’s mission is to discover and develop effective, selective, and safe oral anti-viral and anti-bacterial drugs to treat, prevent, and complement vaccines for high-threat biowarfare agents. The company aims to lead the development and provision of these drugs domestically and worldwide, both to assure leading-edge biodefense capability and to prevent and treat naturally occurring illnesses. Smallpox antiviral: SIGA’s lead program, ST-246®, is moving rapidly towards licensure. The drug has shown evidence of safety and high levels of efficacy in multiple animal trials, continued success in human safety studies, and, in one emergency compassionate use case, was instrumental in the recovery of a young boy suffering complications related to vaccinia (smallpox vaccine). The drug has been designated for “fast track” status by the FDA. Activities supporting a New Drug Application (NDA) are currently in process. Hemorrhagic fever virus program: SIGA has identified lead candidates for treating Ebola, Lassa fever, and Junín, each of which is undergoing proof-of-concept animal studies during 2007. SIGA intends these to advance to IND-enabling activities by 2008. Markets for SIGA’s smallpox and hemorrhagic fever products include federal, state, local, and international governmental bodies charged with protecting civilian and military populations from biowarfare threats. Other potential purchasers include major urban and academic medical centers, large corporations and, for the hemorrhagic fever products, foreign governments and non-governmental organizations battling these deadly scourges. Since its inception over a decade ago, SIGA’s approach to drug discovery and development continues to evolve with an eye towards increasing efficiency and delivering success.
